Charles Elston, 96, of Windom died Nov. 8, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom.
A private funeral service was Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Windom with Pastor Mike McInnis and JoAnne Elston officiating.
The service was livestreamed on the LaCanne Family Funeral Service Facebook page.
A private burial followed at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom handled the funeral arrangements.
Charles "Charlie" Calvin Elston was born July 27, 1924, to Charles Christopher and Ethlyn (Lanam) Elston in Windom. He received his education in Windom Public Schools, graduating in 1942.
In 1949, Charles married Betty Jane Lois Oleson at Amo Lutheran Church in rural Storden. They farmed in Great Bend Township in rural Windom their entire married life.
Charles and Betty also were blessed with seven children.
Farming was a lifestyle for Charles, but his passion was raising livestock. At the end of his farming career, he and son, Ray, had approximately 120 stock cows and fed a few hundred feeders. they also invested in feedlots in South Dakota. Charles also worked closely with his children's 4-H calf projects over the years.
In retirement, Ray took over the farming operation and in 2007 Charles moved to live at Remick Ridge Estates in Windom. In 2016, he moved to Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial.
On Charles' 90th birthday, he celebrated with family and the neighborhood on the Elston Farms, which became registered as a Century Farm.
In addition to farming, Charles also enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, as well as fishing trips. In retirement, Charles and Betty spent winters in Texas for 10 years.
Charles was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Windom. He also was a member of the Windom Co-op Elevator Board, Beef Producters and the country school board.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane; daughter, Mary Elston Borsgard; son-in-law, Tim Jones; a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Roberta and Ruth.
Survivovors include his six children: Ray (Pat) Elston and Daryl (Lynne) Elston, all of Windom; Mark Robert (Elaine) Elston and Linda Jane Elston, all of Minneapolis; Gary (Mojgan) Elston of Glendale, Ariz.; and John (Joanne) Elston of Grand Saline, Texas; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
