Bernardine Hecker, 98, of Windom died Oct. 20, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Bernardine Francis Bentler was born May 7, 1922, to Leo and Anne (Krause) Bentler in Randall. After graduating from St. Francis High School in Little Falls in 1940, she earned her teaching license in primary education in 1942 from St. Cloud State.
In 1945, she began teaching first and second grades in Heron lake.
In 1947, Bernardine married Kermit Hecker in Wisconsin. She continued teaching until 1951, when their daughter, Lee, was born. A son, Scott, followed in 1953.
After Lee and Scott were grown, Bernardine returned to work in 1970, as a teacher's aide at Heron Lake Elementary School, where she continued to work until retiring in 1991.
After Kermit's death in 2003, Bernardine continued living in their home until becoming a resident of Good Samaritan Society in Windom in September.
Bernardine enjoyed hosting and entertaining family gatherings, as well as camping and flower gardening in her younger years. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She even attended a Twins game at age 91.
In addition to her husband of 56 years, Kermit, Bernardine was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Lloyd.
Survivors include her daughter, Lee (Steve) Bornhoft of Heron Lake; son, Scott Hecker of Heron Lake; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her dog, Weezie.
