Lawrence W. Kolander

Lawrence W. Kolander, age 96 of Lakefield, passed away on Aug. 15, 2020, a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Born to Otto and Helena (Rossow) Kolander on June 25, 1924, at their home in Heron Lake Township, Lawrence grew up on the family farm and attended St. Peter's Lutheran Parochial School and District 66 school in Heron Lake Township.
He took over the family farm, planting and harvesting the crops, milking cows, raising hogs and tending a flock of laying hens, in addition to doing custom bailing.
Lawrence is survived by one sister-in-law Ruth (Mrs. Wilmer) Kolander; and many nieces and nephews, including: Keith, Daren, Corey and Chad Kolander, Lori Kolander and Cindy Kolander, Donna (Dave) Lappe, Dan (Nova) Kolander, John Kolander, Nadine Kolander Roberts, and Linda (Rollie) Sampson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Helena (Rossow) Kolander; sisters: Anna, Bernice, Alice and Esther; and brothers: Edgar, Elmer, Rudolph, Alvin and Wilmer.
Lawrence had many hobbies over the years, including fox hunting, collecting antique John Deere tractors and equipment, playing polka music on his Hohner accordian and playing cards (especially pinochle) with family and friends.
He was always one to carry on a fun loving conversation "bye golly," and never shied away from a good tease. It did not take much prodding to encourage Lawrence to offer a tune or two on his accordion and if you had an instrument you were asked to join right in. For the past seven years his accordion music brought smiles to residents and staff of the nursing home.
A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held Sept. 9.
He will be greatly missed, "bye golly."
