John "Jack" Schmit was born May 19, 1921, to Michael and Frances (Lentz) Schmit in Luverne. He received his early education in the Catholic school in Iona before attending Slayton and completing his education in country school.
He then worked at the Phillips 66 in Luverne as a gravel truck driver, in Elk River for two years, for Tyler Moore for five years and Toro for 25 years before retiring.
Jack married Beverly Joyce Kinsey. They were blessed with three children - Vernon, Gordon and Brenda Schmit - before the marriage was later dissolved.
Jack was proud and honored to have served in the U.S. Navy, 1941-47, as a Gunner Mate 2nd Class. He was a World War II veteran.
Family was of utmost importance to Jack, who never missed a birthday and visited during every holiday. He raised all three children of his children.
Jack was strong in his Catholic faith. After church, he took his granddaughter, Misty, to visit a different relative each Sunday.
He will be remembered as a listener and willing to help others in need. He rode his bike around town into his 90s and went to the library once a week to read newspapers.
He was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Schmidt; a brother, William "Bill" Schmit; and a sister, Elizabeth Schmalz.
Survivors include his two children, Gordon (Elizabeth Nixon) Schmit of Le Sueur and Brenda (Richard) Koch of Windom; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
