For 15 years, Merle and Audrey spent winters in Arizona, where they met people who became lifelong friends. He also learned where were the best fishing spots.
Christmas was Merle's favorite holiday and loved decorating for the holiday. His Christmas lights display in Lamberton won first place three times. He also will be remembered for putting a lot of time into picking out the perfect Christmas gift for each person.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Audrey; three sons: Larry (Heidi) Lohre, Gary (Trish) Lohre and Paul (Nicole) Lohre; stepchildren; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brothers, Ben (Joni) Lohre and Dan (Mavis) Lohre.
