Former Windom Police Chief Elton Wagner of Casa Grande, Ariz., passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at his home on the evening of Jan. 3, 2020.
Elton was born October 1934 in Wolsey, S.D., to David and Emma Wagner. He grew up on a farm in eastern South Dakota and graduated from Wolsey High School.
In high school, he set county records in track, running the half mile and mile.
After high school, Elton entered the Army and was in one of the first IBM detachments, while stationed in Germany for two years.
After the army, he went back to Huron, S.D., and got his business and law enforcement degree.
In 1959, he met and married his first wife, Lillian. They moved to Rapid City, S.D., in 1960 when Elton began his law enforcement career. They were blessed with two children, Bart and Valeria.
In 1967, he moved his family to Sioux City, Iowa, where he worked as safety director for a large national trucking company.
In 1970, the family moved back to his hometown of Wolsey, S.D., were Elton bought and ran a bar for three years.
In 1974, Elton moved to Windom as the new police chief. He honorably and proudly served the people of Windom for 23 years.
He was a member of Kiwanis as well as a Moose and Elk.
Elton spent his retirement years between Minnesota, Florida and Arizona, before settling full-time in Casa Grande, Ariz.
On Nov. 27, 2014, Elton married Elaine Kenyon and they lived full-time in Arizona together until his death.
Elton was preceded in death by his parents, David and Emma; his brother, Clarence; his sister, Melinda; as well as his first wife, Lillian.
Elton is survived by his loving wife, Elaine; son, Bart (Lucinda) of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and daughter, Valeria (William) of Citrus Hills, Fla.; and granddaughters, Jordyn and Emma.
Elton chose to be cremated and his ashes will be interred at The Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at Marana on a later date.
A small family graveside service will be performed at his request.
