Joyce Barbara Carey
Our beloved Joyce Barbara Carey, age 65, passed away April 9, 2019, from a rare form of liver cancer.
Born and raised in Windom, Joyce graduated from Windom High School (1971), received her B.A. at Southwest State University (1974) and her M.A. at Southern Illinois University (1979).
Her teaching career included positions at Haven High School (Haven, Kan.); Southwest State University (Marshall) and Dakota State University (Madison, S.D.).
She found her dream job at Normandale Community College where she taught for over 27 years. Joyce was an influential instructor and colleague, teaching a variety of communication classes and was the Coordinator of International Education.
With Joyce's love of travel, she and her students experienced many countries and cultures around the world. In addition, she enjoyed traveling with friends and family.
Joyce spent recent years with her life partner, Richard Sheldon. Together they enjoyed traveling, biking, kayaking and spending time at their lake cabin.
Joyce also leaves behind many friends and colleagues who have all been inspired by her selfless caring, thoughtfulness and compassion. She shared her love of life, travel and sense of humor with all those who knew her.
Joyce is preceded in death by both of her parents, Katherina and Avon.
She is survived by her soul mate, Richard Sheldon, who lovingly cared for her every day despite his own health issues; two brothers, Merle (Diane) of Peoria, Ill., and James (Tammy Glidden) of Windom; and her "second mom," Frances Lange of Minneapolis.
A Celebration of Life will be on April 19 with visitation at noon, service at 1 p.m., held at Washburn-McReavy, 2300 W. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington, MN 55431.
