Royce Becker, 82, of Ellsworth, the father of Shelly Lovell of Windom, died Oct. 26, 2017, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
A memorial service was Monday at Zion Presbyterian Church, in Ellsworth with Pastor Paul Snyder officiating.
Burial of cremains with full military honors provided by the Ellsworth American Legion was at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Ellsworth.
Dingmann Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Adrian handled the funeral arrangements.
Royce Eugene Becker was born May 18, 1935, to Fred and Jennie (Williams) Becker in Wilmot, S.D. At age 3, he moved with his family to Luverne and later to Little Rock, Iowa. Royce attended country school before graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1953, where he played football and basketball. He also was a member of Kanaranzi Livewire 4-H through which he often showed pigs at the state fair.
In 1953, Royce began working for Adrian Concrete, then served his country in the Minnesota National Guard from 1957 to 1964.
In 1957, Royce married Marlene Ann Meester at Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. The couple lived in Adrian, Ellsworth and Kanaranzi before moving to Ellsworth in 1961.
In 1964, Royce returned to Adrian Concrete. Royce partnered with Jim Honnerman and bought the company in 1976, changing the name to Adrian Tile company. Royce sold his share of the company in 1997 and began helping out at Dan's Service Station in Ellsworth. In 2007, he began working part-time at CHS.
Royce was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, where he had served as trustee, deacon and elder.
Royce also had served as a councilman and mayor of Ellsworth, on the Ellsworth Volunteer Fire Department and was a charter member of the Ellsworth Community Club.
He enjoyed polka music, bowling, stock car racing at local tracks, spending over 11 winters in Texas, traveling to the casino and baseball.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Becker.
Royce is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marlene Becker of Ellsworth; three children: Lance (Nancy) Becker of Adrian; Rhonda (Kenny) Groen of Ellsworth; and Shelly (Gene) Lovell of Windom; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Linley (Lorraine) Becker of Sioux Falls; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Becker of New Hope.
