When the skies of November turn gloomy
It was decision time for the old boy that lives in north Windom. Do you spend the last eve in October trying to find a ring-necked rooster with your brown dog or do you sit on your front deck and pass out candy to the kids?

Have you backed up lately?
We write about this subject pretty frequently, but only because it is so important.
I can't tell you how many times we have a computer come into our shop with a failing hard drive. And most times the customer is very fortunate that the drive is not completely dead and we can grab their content, but there are times when it is too late.

Pleased to have helped move Highway 60 forward
Ten years ago, the future of Highway 60 took an unexpected leap to the top of the Minnesota House's priority list.
While I was proud to have led the charge for new funding for the roadway at the Capitol, the reality is the people of southwestern Minnesota and their strong voices are the ones who really got the job done.

Memories of Bob
I would be remiss if I didn't share some thoughts about longtime Windom resident Bob Lindaman, who died last month and whose Celebration of Life service is Monday.

'The whole room shook'
The nicknames of America and Minnesota tell a sweet story, in and of themselves.
The land of opportunity, land of 10,000 lakes and home of the brave, come to mind. Lately, it feels like our motto ought to be, "Divided We Stand."

Skip the line, get tickets now
Football fever is in the air again in Mt. Lake.
The Wolverine football team will play in the Class Nine-Man state quarterfinals Friday, at 7 p.m., against Verndale. The game will be played at Buffalo High School.
For those going to the game, my best advice is to leave early. From what I've seen on Mapquest, there really is no quick way to get to Buffalo from the southwest part of the state. It would seem that the quickest, easiest way to go would be to hit Highway 15 north, take that to Highway 212 east and then catch Highway 25 north by Norwood-Young America. It will be about a three-hour drive.
After a long drive, the last thing you will want to do as a fan is stand in a line, in the cold, to purchase tickets to the game. Fortunately, the Minnesota State High School League is making advance tickets available for purchase.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Mt. Lake Public School office through 11:30 a.m., Friday, during regular business hours.
Admission to the game is $11 for adults and $7 for students, whether you purchase your tickets in advance or at the gate.
Facing a legend
MLA's opponent Friday, Verndale, is one of the state's elite programs.
Verndale Coach Mike Mahlen has compiled the most coaching victories in state football history. Mahlen enters the game Friday with 393 career coaching victories. Legendary Brainerd coach Ron Stolski is second on the career wins list with 386.
Mahlen is one of only six coaches in state history to pile up over 300 career victories. His teams have played in 16 state tournaments, winning titles in 1997 and 2002. His Pirate teams also have three state runner-up finishes.
Bring on winter?
While the fall sports season is still going on for one team in our area, attention is turning to winter for everyone else.
Girls hockey practice has been going on for over a week. On Monday, girls basketball, boys hockey and gymnastics get underway.
Boys basketball and wrestling are the last winter sports to start up, with practices beginning on Nov. 19.
