End of the Youngers, fall fishing, pheasants
The Jesse James and Younger brothers gangs were a rough, tough bunch of outlaws in the 1870s. To some extent they were still fighting the Civil War, seeking revenge through guerilla tactics. They thought a bank robbery in Minnesota would do two things; punish the north and enhance their own wealth.
A few weeks ago I wrote about the Northfield bank attempt where the citizens essentially said, not in our town.

New statue spruces up Rec Area
In recent years, the Windom Area Girls Fastpitch Association has taken on several improvement projects for the facilities at the Windom Recreation Area's softball fields.
Among the ones in recent years are an inning-by-inning scoreboard on Eagle Field and decorative fence screens.
But recently, a new decorative statue was installed near the main entrance to the complex.

The state of the newspaper
When someone mentioned National Newspaper Week was coming up (it's now this week), I pondered the current state of the newspaper industry.
I'm still more than a handful of years away from retiring and I can write with confidence that the local newspaper is going to be around well after I retire.

Citizen, Windom turn 148
Every year, about this time, I think about a guy named Ebenezer Huntington, the founder of the Windom Reporter, a forerunner of the Citizen.
As we celebrate National Newspaper Week, my thoughts drift to Sept. 7, 1871, when volume 1, number 1, of the Windom Reporter was printed. A handful of buildings dotted the Square at the time.
