In almost any other year, Santa Claus and an awestruck child would grace page 1 of this week's Citizen. After all, we would be just days removed from the year's most grand entrance. Countless local residents, former and current, have the scene etched in their memories. We close our eyes and vividly recall Santa rolling through town aboard one of Windom's finest fire trucks - lights flashing, sirens blaring, children screaming with delight. As Jim Nantz would say, "It's a tradition unlike any other." By now, we know this custom fell victim to the pandemic. Our entire state has taken a step back as we try to stem the tide of COVID-19 outbreaks. Fortunately for Windom area youngsters, there is a Plan B. Tyann Marcy, executive director of the Windom Area Chamber of Commerce, said Santa will make his first local appearance on Dec. 17 as part of "Christmas by Candlelight - Drive-Thru Holiday Experience." "Santa is sponsored by BARC," Marcy said. "He will be on 10th Street, near BARC, sitting by a fire and a Christmas tree. "There will be a mailbox there. Families can pull up and drop off their letters and they'll get a letter back from Santa (be sure to include a return address)." It's not tradition, but I like it. Kids get their chance to greet Santa from afar while making sure he gets that all-important letter.
