My favorite Citizen edition of the year is our Thanksgiving edition. That's because it always contains our finest, most uplifting, feature story of the year. These stories embody the spirit of Thanksgiving. By now, you may have already read Dave Fjeld's excellent page 1 story about one of Windom's best people, Kristi Maricle. I can also easily recall a piece I wrote several years ago about a good friend, Nestor Palm. The recovery he made after his serious fall from the Toro plant's roof is nothing short of miraculous. This Thanksgiving, I'll think about family and friends, many of whom we now see sparingly. My parents are 93 and in fairly good health. Now and then, Dad will say a Norwegian phrase with a twinkle in his eye, something like, "Tusen takk," which is Norwegian for "a thousand thanks." No doubt, we'll hear it this week. I'll also think of my friend, Don Jackson, who passed away on Saturday. I'm thankful I got to know him pretty well while we served on the Windom Baseball Association board. We worked together, along with the board, on the successful Island Park remodeling project and in running countless summer baseball tournaments, also big successes. The secret: We did what Don asked and none of us wanted to let him down.
