Package theft season returns
The Christmas shopping season is officially underway and gifts are on the move, to vehicles and doorsteps all over town.
Unfortunately, those gifts are too often intercepted by thieves before they reach the Christmas tree. It is a growing problem, even in Cottonwood County.
Windom Assistant Police Chief Cory Hillesheim says this is prime time for thieves. Gift thefts occurred locally last Christmas and he does not expect thieves to take a year off.
Thieves often watch parking lots, waiting for the best time and vehicle to strike.
"The best thing you can do is never leave anything of value in your vehicle, whether it is locked or unlocked," Hillesheim said. "It is a crime of opportunity. Don't give them an opportunity."
Meanwhile, items ordered online are often dropped outside the front door and left unattended for hours. That creates opportunity.
"People follow around the UPS trucks," Hillesheim said. "If you can have things delivered to your workplace, that is your best bet."
Watchful neighbors can also help. If you see suspicious activity, call the police.
