Another nail in the coffin for Windows 7

In the past we've indicated that coming in January 2020 Windows 7 will no longer be supported and will stop receiving security updates. Many customers have reached out to us about this topic to ask questions, and some have upgraded to Windows 10 to get ahead of the curve. For those of you who are still waiting on upgrading from your Windows 7 machines, Microsoft has announced another major step in the demise of Windows 7.
Coming this month is the SHA-2 update for Windows 7. Windows 7 is currently on SHA-1 and SHA verifies update authenticity to the computer to make sure that there is nothing malicious with any updates sent to your computer. With the advancement of technology and simply because SHA-1 has been Microsoft's standard for years it is becoming less and less secure to verify updates this way.
This SHA-2 update will be released on March 12, 2019, to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, and you have until July 16, 2019, to apply the update to your system. If you do not get this update applied before July 16 you will no longer receive security updates to your Windows 7 machine and therefore that makes it very dangerous to use online.
These types of announcements are going to keep coming and before you know it January will be here. So if you haven't considered replacing your Windows 7 machine now is the time to start doing so.
Give us a call if you have any questions regarding this update, or want advice on upgrading to Windows 10.
