Another reason to keep up on Windows update - Windows Defender!

Windows Defender is Microsoft's free antivirus it includes in Windows 10 for everyone. They originally bought their antivirus from another company and have been upgrading it from there.
In the past, Microsoft's antivirus never scored particularly well. It always seemed to miss some threats, was often bulky and hard to navigate, and generally just didn't perform as well as other free antivirus, much less the paid ones.
However, that's been changing these last few years - and it makes updates all the more important.
Microsoft really has been doubling down on security aspects. While we're all familiar with Microsoft breaking our computers by some update randomly corrupting a file, or failing to install at all, what you might not know is that there's also a lot of security updates keeping you safe. There are so many, in fact, that Windows Defender recently received top marks from an independent virus test company called AV-Test. While many other antivirus solutions also did well, and have their own uses, they decided Defender was the best of them all. To make sure you get this free protection you have to keep up on updates, though, or it's not very useful.
One of the best parts about Defender is that it also runs alongside any other antivirus that you have. Whether you get Norton, McAfee, or our recommendation, Webroot, you get an extra layer of security with Windows Defender.
Because of these results and the positive real world results we've seen, we recommend Defender to everyone. If you still want extra security, Webroot is a great addition. It doesn't slow down the computer like other extremely heavy antivirus programs will, and it adds what's called "heuristic" protection. What that means is even if it's a new virus, Webroot might be able to catch it by it's actions rather than having to be programmed to know what it is. This can help prevent more 0 day attacks - when the virus is 0 days old so nobody has seen it yet.
You may also see things in different protection software about offering a firewall. Although having a firewall is important, you likely already have two. Every modern (and even old) router or modem has a firewall. On top of that, Windows includes a built in firewall all the way back to Windows 2000.
So, when you are choosing antivirus and see one that also includes a firewall, don't pay extra for the firewall. You already have one, and it works great. Some firewalls, such as Norton's firewall, actually cause a lot more problems than they solve.
