The greatest time of year
The snow and leaves crunched beneath my feet as I trudged toward our backyard shed Sunday afternoon.
It seemed like yesterday I made that same walk in shirtsleeves.

My door is always open
If you are in the newspaper business long enough, you have been humbled more than a few times.
I was at a meeting once where a guy clearly did not realize I was in the room. He went way out of his way to degrade "that Larson character."
I later quietly pulled him aside and asked if we could discuss the matter at his convenience. We talked at length about his situation and, to my relief, he didn't try to put a spin on it (the "spin goober" approach), he simply leveled with me.
We walked away with a better understanding of one another and a better feel for our points of view. He even laughed and promised not to call me "that Larson character" again.
As we celebrate National Newspaper Week, it is a good time to share a comment I used often in 1988, my first year here at the Citizen: "My door is always open."
Expressing concerns can seem awkward, but it's a necessary piece of communication. We, as a newspaper, learn from criticism.
One of the biggest problems in society today is that people are so busy defending their point of view, they refuse to listen - or even try to understand - others. I'll say it again:
"My door is always open."
