Suit seeks 'just compensation'
Alec Smith must be rolling over in his grave.
Who is Alec Smith, you ask? Three years ago, we learned in a well-publicized story that, because of cost, Alec was forced to ration his insulin. It is believed the rationing led to his death.
Last week, state lawmakers approved, by a wide margin, "The Alec Smith Affordability Act," a new law providing insulin to diabetics who can't afford it. There were cheers and tears across the state - but hold on.
Hours before the law was to take effect, a lawsuit was filed seeking to get the law declared unconstitutional. The suit was filed by an industry trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, or "PhRMA." The concern stated in the suit is whether there was "just (fair) compensation" for private property.
So, where in all of this is Alec's fair compensation?
