Refreshing visit by state leader
Last week, one of our state's top leaders stopped by my office for a chat.
No, it wasn't Tim Walz or Collin Peterson. However, it was someone elected with votes from Windom to Grand Portage and points between.
She holds an office famously held by Arne Carlson until he was elected governor in 1990. Yes, you guessed right. It was Julie Blaha.
Who?
If you know little about our first-year auditor, you're not alone. She probably needs an ID when paying by check. That seems fine with her.
During our brief visit, I sensed she is more passionate about her job than publicity. That's refreshing.
Blaha was here to meet with Auditor/Treasurer Donna Torkelson, one of 87 offices on her statewide tour. Recent stops included Nobles, Jackson and Murray counties.
"It's been interesting," Blaha said. "When I stop at an auditor's office, I see how they keep records, what their infrastructure is. I'm seeing how people work to modernize recordkeeping so they can eliminate errors and increase efficiency."
As important is the chance to see people around the state and take questions face to face. This basic human element is too often forgotten by our leaders - unless it's an election year.
