Citizen readers are fortunate to receive Dr. Kuecker's columns

Citizen readers should realize how fortunate they are to enjoy the outdoor and environmental knowledge of columnist Dr. Ron Kuecker.
His natural writing ability is a bonus. Sometimes Ron's writings remind me of the books and public TV series featuring Dr. James Herriot, the country veterinarian from England who wrote of his on-farm experiences with livestock producers.
James Herriot died in 1995, but I guarantee his books, such as "All Creatures Great and Small," will shorten your winter.
Ron once told me that when the morning calls came in to his vet clinic from area livestock producers, he would quickly take my dad's call before other vets got to it. When I asked why, Ron replied it was so "we could talk hunting and fishing at the same time I treated his cattle."
My dad, George Pankonin, fed cattle north of Jeffers and is now 97, living at St. John's Circle of Care in Springfield. He still remembers his cattle feeding days and good chats with Ron.
I also remember racing out to the feedlot when Ron drove up with the vet truck. I wasn't going to miss the fishing and hunting stories.
Thanks for the memories Ron, and please keep writing. I appreciate what it takes to produce a good column, especially since I remember riding with you to research an article as an agricultural writer for The Farmer magazine.
