12/17/2020 11:30:00 AM Winter sports practices pushed back to Jan. 4 start
Wednesday's announcement by Gov. Tim Walz regarding closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic included tentative dates to begin a return to play for youth and high school sports teams.
The guidance from the governor called for a date of Jan. 4 for teams to be able to return to practice for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey, wrestling and gymnastics, as well as boys swimming and diving and boys and girls nordic and alpine skiing.
The governor's announcement did not include a proposed start date for games to resume. Prior to Wednesday's announcement, the Minnesota State High School League had three tentative plans in place, with proposed start dates for practices and games. The plan stated that a practice start date of Jan. 4 would likely result in games beginning the week of Jan. 14.
Most high schools set tentative winter athletic schedules with a proposed practice start date of Dec. 21. Those schedules will now have to be adjusted, with the number of competitions for each team being slightly reduced.
The MSHSL plans to have a reduced winter sports schedule, while still planning to offer a full spring sports season, after the spring season was cancelled in its entirety in 2020.
