MSHSL approves models to begin winter, spring sports seasons
The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors voted Thursday on various models that set the framework to begin the winter sports season, as well as the following spring sports season.
Three models were discussed by the board, with the board essentially approving all three models, contingent on the lifting of Executive Order 20-99 by Gov. Tim Walz.
If the executive order is lifted on Dec. 18, practices for all winter sports would begin on Dec. 21, with the first scheduled events of the season beginning the week of Jan. 4.
The other models have proposed practice start dates of Jan. 4 and Jan. 18, depending on when the executive order is lifted.
The MSHSL board acknowledged that many schools in the state are currently in a distance learning model, and that local districts will dictate when sports programs can begin.
The models also have tentative starting dates for the spring sports season. The models have a proposed start date for practices of March 29, with the season concluding in early June.
All of the models for winter and spring sports include a possible timeframe to hold postseason tournaments, including state tournaments.
The MSHSL Board meeting is still in session, with plans to discuss classification for nine-man football still on the agenda.
