Madelia 06-00-00-06 = 12
MLA 24-21-07-00 = 52

Mt. Lake Area had a makeshift lineup due to injuries and illness, but the Wolverine offense was hitting on all cylinders Tuesday, rolling to a 52-12 victory over Madelia in the Section 3 Nine-Man playoffs at Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines scored on each of their first seven possessions, racking up nearly 500 yards of total offense for the game.

Meanwhile, MLA's defense kept the Blackhawk offense out of the end zone on a pair of drives in the first half, allowing the Wolverines to seize momentum.

Madelia opened the game by marching into Wolverine territory thanks to a long pass completion. But the Wolverine defense stuffed Madelia on a fourth-and-1 play from the MLA 22.

With MLA's leading rusher, Mace Herrig, out of the lineup due to illness, the Wolverines moved quarterback Ethan Nickel to halfback, with junior Marcos DeLeon-Lopez stepping in at quarterback. The move paid dividends immediately, as DeLeon-Lopez cut off a Nickel block on MLA's second play from scrimmage and raced 78 yards to paydirt. DeLeon-Lopez added the two-point conversion run, giving the Wolverines an 8-0 lead.

After forcing a three-and-out on the next Madelia drive, the Wolverines struck quickly again. A 51-yard pass from DeLeon-Lopez to Kayne Chanthaviseth set up a 2-yard Nickel touchdown run. DeLeon-Lopez hit Kolby Kremmin with the two-point pass for a 16-0 lead.

Madelia answered, marching the length of the field and scoring on an 8-yard Ethan Arndt touchdown run to cut MLA's lead to 16-6. But the Wolverines wasted little time regaining control. A 22-yard run by DeLeon-Lopez helped set up an 8-yard DeLeon-Lopez touchdown run. He added the two-point conversion for a 24-6 lead.

The Wolverines put the game out of reach early in the second quarter. After forcing a three-and-out, Kremmin burst through the line to block a Blackhawk punt, with Sam Stade recovering at the Madelia 33. Four plays later, DeLeon-Lopez hit Kremmin across the middle for a 23-yard touchdown strike. The two hooked up on the two-point conversion, giving the Wolverines a 32-6 lead.

After forcing another Madelia punt, MLA marched deep into Blackhawk territory. On fourth-and-13 from the Madelia 14-yard line, DeLeon-Lopez hit Nickel in the back of the end zone, giving the Wolverines a 38-6 lead.

Madelia pushed the ball deep into MLA territory late in the first half, but on third-and-goal from the MLA 1, the Wolverines forced a fumble, recovering on the 2-yard line with under two minutes to go. MLA then set out on a 98-yard drive in just over a minute. Completions of 43 and 24 yards to Kremmin helped set up a 10-yard touchdown pass from DeLeon-Lopez to Tanner Koetzle with 13 seconds to go before halftime. Kremmin's extra-point kick gave MLA a 45-6 halftime lead.

The Wolverines tacked on a touchdown on their opening drive of the second half, as Micah Holmberg burst through the middle for an 18-yard touchdown. The extra-point kick gave MLA a 52-6 lead.

Madelia scored the game's final points on a 72-yard Ramiro Zamora run early in the fourth quarter.

The game ended under unfortunate circumstances, as a Madelia player suffered a significant hip injury. The teams agreed to end the game with 1:19 left on the clock.

DeLeon-Lopez led MLA on the ground, rushing for 119 yards on nine carries. Nickel added 11 carries for 74 yards.

DeLeon-Lopez completed 11-of-13 passes for 213 yards. Kremmin had three catches for 90 yeards while Chanthaviseth had two receptions for 57 yards.

Falcons win by forfeit
Red Rock Central's scheduled Section 2 Nine-Man playoff opener against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart was cancelled and RRC was awarded a forfeit victory, as BLHS was forced to drop out of the playoffs due to COVID-related concerns and a rash of injuries.

RRC is scheduled to host seventh-seeded Nicollet Saturday in Lamberton. Nicollet advanced with a 40-24 win over second-seeded Ogilvie Tuesday.
