MLA 06-06-08-13 = 33
Win-E-Mac 06-06-00-00 = 12

Mt. Lake Area imposed its will on defense in the second half Saturday evening, breaking things open for a 33-12 victory over the state's third-ranked nine-man team, Win-E-Mac, in a game played at the University of Minnesota-Morris.

The first half saw the two high-powered offenses going back-and-forth. The Wolverines struck first, scoring on a 3-yard Mace Herrig touchdown run. But the Patriots answered with a 13-yard quarterback keeper, tying the score at 6-6.

Early in the second, the Wolverines regained the lead as Herrig plunged in from two yards out, but Win-E-Mac again answered on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, tying the score at 12-12.

MLA mounted a drive before halftime, but was stopped short as time expired. However, the momentum from that drive carried into the second half, as MLA took the opening kickoff of the half and marched the length of the field, scoring on a 10-yard pass from Ethan Nickel to Herrig. Nickel added the two-point conversion, giving MLA a 20-12 lead.

From there, the Wolverine defense took over, putting pressure on the Win-E-Mac offense and forcing three second-half turnovers.

The Wolverines cashed in two of those turnovers in the fourth quarter, as Nickel scored on touchdown runs of 37 and 26 yards to seal the victory.

Herrig finished with 109 yards on 18 carries. Nickel added 81 yards on 14 carries. Nickel added 93 yards passing on 7-of-9 completions.

Defensively, Nickel picked off a pair of passes, while Kolby Kremmin had an interception and a fumble recovery.

Windom game Saturday postponed
The Windom Eagles' scheduled football game Saturday at Pipestone has been postponed.

The announcement was made late Friday night. The reasons for the postponement were not specified, and no reschedule date has been determined at this time.

RRC game Friday cancelled
Red Rock Central's scheduled game Friday against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart was cancelled due to COVID-19 related concerns within the RRC team.

RRC also has cancelled its scheduled game for Oct. 29 against Cedar Mountain, which was supposed to be the RRC homecoming football game. RRC also has suspended its volleyball program until Nov. 4 after announcing that the district would move to a distance learning model at the high school for the next two weeks.

WWG 00-00-08-00 = 08
HBC 08-30-08-08 = 54

Westbrook-Walnut Grove put up a fight early, but a dominant second quarter propelled Hills-Beaver Creek to a 54-8 victory over the Chargers Friday in Hills.

After forcing the Chargers to go three-and-out on their first possession, the Patriots struck quickly, scoring on a 45-yard run from Gavin Wysong. The two-point conversion put the Patriots up 8-0.

WWG's defense stiffened on the next Patriot possession, forcing HBC to turn the ball over on downs. That set up one of WWG's best drives of the night, as the Chargers marched deep into HBC territory. But on fourth down from the HBC 9, a pass into the end zone fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.

HBC capitalized, scoring just two plays later on an 81-yard Tyson Bork run. The two-point conversion put HBC up 16-0 early in the second quarter.

The wheels fell off for the Chargers late in the first half. Bork scored on a 3-yard run with 4:18 to go in the half, putting HBC up 24-0. WWG then fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, with HBC converting on a 31-yard pass from Wysong to Ty Bundesen for a 32-0 lead.

An interception by the Chargers gave HBC the ball late in the half, with Wysong finding Bork down the middle for a 47-yard touchdown with 1:17 to go before halftime, giving the Patriots a 38-0 lead.

Wysong added a 30-yard touchdown run halfway through the third quarter, giving HBC a 46-0 lead.

The Chargers got on the board late in the third quarter, as Ethan Mischke scooped up a fumble and returned it inside the Patriot 5. Three plays later, Mischke reeled in a 4-yard touchdown strike from Brady Ross. The two hooked up again on the two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 46-8.

With the reserves for both teams in the game in the fourth quarter, HBC closed the scoring on a 15-yard run by Drew Leenderts.
