8/4/2020 3:08:00 PM MSHSL moves football, volleyball to spring; spring sports move to late spring/early summer schedule
High school sports in Minnesota will look very different in the 2020-21 school year.
On Tuesday, the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors voted to move high school football and volleyball to a condensed spring season.
The season will tentatively run from March 15 through May 15, with a shortened regular season and playoffs.
The move of football and volleyball to spring means the MSHSL also will move all spring sports to a late spring/early summer schedule. Spring sports will tentatively start May 15 and run through July 10.
Some fall sports will be allowed to run as scheduled, but with major modifications concerning competition. For cross country, girls tennis, soccer and girls swimming and diving, the season was reduced by 30% in length and by 20% in the number of events.
For cross country teams locally, practices will be allowed to begin Aug. 17. For now, any meets can only have a maximum of three teams, meaning large invitational meets may not be held.
No changes were made to the winter sports season at Tuesday's meeting.
More on the MSHSL decision appears in the Aug. 5 print edition of the Citizen and more on the fallout from the decision will appear in the Aug. 12 print edition of the Citizen.
