Pirates fall in opening game of Region 13C series
Hadley 000 100 310 = 5-14-0
Windom 100 010 000 = 2-6-2
Things fell apart late for the Windom Pirates Wednesday night, as Hadley rallied for a 5-2 victory over the Pirates at Island Park, in the first round of the Region 13C playoffs.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard first, scoring on an Alex Fink RBI single in the bottom of the first.
Hadley tied the game in the fourth, scoring on a throwing error on a double steal attempt.
The Pirates regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Sam Huska hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
But in the top of the seventh, a pair of bloop singles by Hadley tied the game and a triple to right-center from Max Zwart gave the Buttermakers the lead. Hadley ended the seventh with an RBI single from Justin Benda, taking a 4-2 lead.
The Buttermakers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, scoring when an infield pop-up was misplayed with two outs, allowing a runner to score from second.
Pirate starting pitcher Ross Ackerman worked the first six innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Collin Lovell took the pitching loss, allowing three runs on four hits in one inning of work.
Game two of the best-of-three series will be played Saturday afternoon in Hadley, beginning at 2 p.m. If the Pirates win and force a deciding third game, it will be played Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m., at Island Park.
