Windom 022 002 210 = 9-12-2 Mt. Lake 100 101 000 = 3-7-2 The regular season in the First Nite League came to an end Sunday afternoon in St. James for the Windom Pirates and Mt. Lake Lakers, as the Pirates pounded out 12 hits on their way to a 9-3 victory.
Mt. Lake got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Blake Spinks led off with a single, moved up on a hit batsman and a fielder's choice and scored on a throwing error.
But the Pirates took the lead for good in the top of the second. Brett Willaby and Joel Riordan hit back-to-back RBI singles, giving Windom a 2-1 lead.
In the third, Conner Redman hit an RBI single and Kobe Lovell hit a sacrifice fly, giving Windom a 4-1 lead.
Mt. Lake got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Levi Jahnke led off with a single, moved up on an Andrew Hirsch single and a fielder's choice grounder and scored on a passed ball.
In the top of the sixth, Riordan scored on a wild pitch and Alex Fink hit an RBI double. Mt. Lake countered with a run, scoring on a Derek Harder RBI single, cutting Windom's lead to 6-3.
The Pirates added two more runs in the seventh, as a sacrifice fly by Riordan drove in a run and a mishandled relay throw allowed a second run to score.
Windom scored its final run in the top of the eighth on a Redman sacrifice fly.
Fink led the Pirates with three hits. Jack Mellstrom, Noah Kloss and Redman added two hits each.
Blake Spinks led Mt. Lake with two hits.
Kobe Lovell picked up the pitching win for the Pirates, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out eight.
Tylor Duerksen took the loss for the Lakers, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in seven innings. He walked four and struck out two.
Mt. Lake 322 010 001 = 9-8-4 Worthington 030 000 311 = 8-13-4 The Mt. Lake Lakers jumped to an early lead, but had to hang on late Friday to claim a 9-8 victory over the Worthington Cubs in First Nite League action at Worthington.
The Lakers built an early 7-3 lead before holding off the Worthington comeback. Mt. Lake scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth before working out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to claim the win.
The Lakers struck for three runs in the top of the first. Blake Spinks scored when Zach Spinks reached on an error. Andrew Hirsch followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Wyatt Stevens singled, with an outfield error allowing Peyton Engleking to race all the way home from first. Blake Spinks followed with an RBI single for a 5-0 lead.
Up 5-3 in the third, Derek Harder plated a run on a fielder's choice grounder and later scored on a wild pitch.
Wyatt Westcott added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, giving the Lakers an 8-3 lead.
Worthington battled back, cutting the Laker lead to 8-7 going into the ninth when Hirsch hit a key RBI single for a 9-7 lead.
After a double play to start the bottom of the ninth, Worthington mounted a rally, scoring on a Turner Rogers single. But with runners on second and third, a groundout ended the game.
Hirsch had two hits and three RBI to lead the Lakers. Blake Spinks added a pair of hits.
Zach Spinks had a pitching rarity, picking up both the win and a save. Spinks worked the first six innings before giving way to Blake Spinks on the mound. But after Worthington scored three runs in the seventh inning, Zach Spinks returned to the mound for the final two innings. He ended up allowing five runs on 11 hits, walked one and struck out three.
