Lakefield 100 000 000 = 1-5-3 Windom 200 302 01x = 8-7-2 The Windom Pirates had a strong effort on the mound and at the plate Wednesday night, surging to an 8-1 victory over the Lakefield Horned Frogs in First Nite League play at Island Park.
Three Pirate pitchers held the Frogs scoreless over the final eight innings of the game. Meanwhile, the Pirates had a patient eye at the plate, drawing eight walks and three hit batsmen to go with seven hits.
Lakefield struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. But the Pirates immediately answered, taking the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning. Sam Huska walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Jack Mellstrom line-drive single down the right-field line. Mellstrom then moved up on a walk. He then scored on a groundout by Noah Kloss.
The Pirates tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Collin Lovell was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Joel Riordan single. Alex Borsgard drew a walk. Huska and Alex Fink each drove a runs on sacrifice flies.
In the bottom of the sixth, Huska knocked in a run with a single and Fink plated a run with a sacrifice fly, giving the Pirates a 7-1 lead.
Windom's final run scored in the bottom of the eighth. Jacob Johnson and Kade Sammons drew two-out walks. After a wild pitch, Johnson scored when Joseph Torres Mendez reached on an error.
Mellstrom had two hits in the victory for the Pirates. Huska and Fink each knocked in two runs.
Ross Ackerman earned the pitching victory, holding the Frogs to three hits and one walk in seven innings of work. He struck out seven.
The Pirates return to action Friday, when they travel to face the Milroy Irish. Game time at Irish Yard is set for 7:30 p.m.
