Brewers hold off Pirate rally
NU 212 322 020 = 14-9-1
Windom 000 153 001 = 10-14-9
A late rally couldn't offset a slow start and shaky defense for the Windom Pirates Tuesday, as the Pirates dropped a 14-10 decision to the New Ulm Brewers in a non-league game at Island Park.
The Brewers jumped to a 10-1 lead by the top of the fifth inning and scored in seven of their nine at-bats. Windom's defense committed nine errors in the game, leading to eight unearned runs.
Trailing 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Pirates got on the board with an RBI single by Kobe Lovell.
Then, down 10-1 in the fifth, the Pirates mounted a five-run rally. Sam Huska drew a bases-loaded walk, Collin Lovell hit a two-run single, Jacob Johnson was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Joel Riordan drew a bases-loaded walk.
New Ulm stretched the lead to 12-6 in the top of the sixth, but the Pirates pulled to within 12-9 in the bottom of the inning. Collin Lovell hit a two-run single and Riordan drew a bases-loaded walk.
Windom scored its final run in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Huska.
Noah Kloss led the Pirates with four hits. Jack Mellstrom, Huska, Collin Lovell and Alex Borsgard had two hits each.
Mellstrom took the pitching loss, allowing eight runs on four hits in 3-1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out one.
