4/17/2020 4:59:00 PM DNR walleye egg take cancelled, but trout still stocked locally
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced this week that its fisheries divisions across the state would be cancelling their annual spring walleye egg collection.
Locally, the staff from the Windom fisheries offices typically collects eggs from walleye in Lake Sarah in Murray County.
However, local fisheries supervisor Ryan Doorenbos said that some fisheries projects have gone on as scheduled. That included the stocking of brown trout in several area streams, including Shelldorf Creek near the Sun Valley Gun Club.
Doorenbos added that a shipment of rainbow trout, which had to be cancelled in another part of the state, was sent to the Windom office. Those trout were also stocked into Shelldorf Creek and other streams in the region.
While the fishing season for walleye and northern pike opens on May 9, the season for trout fishing in inland streams opens Saturday.
