Windom 24-23 = 47
Fairmont 40-40 = 80

A prolonged scoring drought in the first half doomed the Windom Eagle boys basketball team Saturday night as the Eagles were knocked out of the Section 3AA playoffs with an 80-47 loss at Fairmont.

Windom came out hot from the field, briefly holding leads of 12-10 and 16-15. But a pair of free throws gave the Cardinals the lead before Fairmont get red hot from the outside.

A 22-2 run saw Fairmont build a double-figure lead as the Cardinals led 40-24 at halftime. Fairmont then started the second half strong. The Cardinals hit 14 three-pointers in the game, including a trio in an 11-0 start to the second half.

Sam Doorenbos led the Eagles with 12 points in the loss. Dylan Serreyn and Henry Erickson each finished with 11 points.

MCC 24-26 = 50
WWG 21-36 = 57

Westbrook-Walnut Grove struggled to get going on offense but found the hot hands in the second half and was sharp from the free throw line throughout. That allowed the Chargers to rally for a 57-50 win over Murray County Central in the first round of the Section 3A Tournament Saturday in Worthington.

MCC's defense was solid throughout the game, limiting WWG's leading scorer, junior guard Ethan Mischke. The Rebels held Mischke to one field goal and seven total points in the game. WWG was held to five field goals, including four three-pointers, in the first half as MCC held a three-point halftime lead.

In the second half, WWG's offense got a jolt from junior Nathan Kuehl, who drained four treys in the half. A three-pointer from Mischke gave WWG the lead and five free throws from Nathan Ross down the stretch iced the victory.

The Chargers went 15-of-22 from the free throw line in the game, while MCC was a frigid 3-of-12 from the stripe.

Kuehl finished the game with five three-pointers and 20 points. Ross went 7-of-7 from the line and also finished with 20 points in the win.

T/ML/GHEC 19-17 = 36
MLAC 30-35 = 65

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey turned in one of its strongest defensive outings of the entire season Saturday night, opening the Section 2A playoffs with a 65-36 win over Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain in Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines held the Jaguars to 30% from the field for the game and limited the Jaguars' tall inside threats throughout.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines had a balanced offensive night, with four double figure scorers and seven players finding the scoring column in each half. That balance allowed the Wolverines to establish an 11-point halftime lead before outscoring the Jaguars 35-17 in the second half.

Sam Paulson led the Wolverines with 14 points in the win. Abe Stoesz, Spencer Khamvongsa and Ethan Nickel each scored 11 points in the victory.

RRC 16-27 = 43
SWC 47-22 = 69

Southwest Minnesota Christian started strong, then went on a lengthy scoring run to close the first half and start the second half Saturday to race to a 69-43 win over Red Rock Central in the Section 3A playoffs at Worthington.

RRC fell behind 13-0 to start the game, but battled back, closing the deficit to 18-13. After making the score 21-16 on a three-pointer, the Falcons went cold and SWC closed the half with a 26-1 run.

SWC then started the second half with a run, building the lead to 35 points in the first seven minutes of the second half.

Sam Helmer led RRC with 18 points in the loss. Jonah Hansen chipped in 10 points.
