New Ulm 1-5-3 = 9

New Ulm used a five-goal second period to take command of the game for good Thursday night, eliminating the Windom Area boys hockey team from the Section 3A playoffs with a 9-2 decision at New Ulm.

New Ulm scored five goals on 19 shots in the second period, after peppering the Eagle net with 21 shots in the first period.

Trailing 2-0 early in the second period, Windom Area got on the scoreboard when Alex Espenson rifled home a shot, assisted by Wyatt Haugen and Kyle Espenson.

But New Ulm took control of the game a minute later, taking a 3-1 lead. New Ulm then tacked on three more goals in the period, leading 6-1 after two periods.

The Eagles briefly cut the deficit to 6-2 in the third period, when Brady Espenson fired home a goal on a 5-on-3 power play. Kyle Espenson assisted on the play.

But New Ulm reclaimed a five-goal lead just 28 seconds later, scoring a shorthanded goal. New Ulm added two more goals, including an empty-net goal, to advance in the playoffs.

New Ulm outshot the Eagles 52-27 for the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 43 saves.
