New Ulm holds off late Eagle rally

Windom Area 1-0-3 = 4
New Ulm 0-2-3 = 5

The Windom Area boys hockey team tried to rally in the closing minutes Tuesday night but ran out of time, falling 5-4 at New Ulm.

The Eagles held a 1-0 lead after one period on an unassisted goal from Brady Espenson, but New Ulm took the lead with a pair of goals in the second, then stretched the lead to 4-1 with two goals in the first five minutes of the third period.

Windom Area battled back, as Kyle Espenson scored an unassisted goal at the 7:56 mark of the third, but New Ulm regained a three-goal lead with 4:01 to go in the game.

The Eagles were able to fight back thanks to a 5-of-3 power play opportunity late in the game. Kyle Espenson's second goal of the game cut the deficit to 5-3. Mikal Anderson added a power play goal with 10 seconds left on the clock, but the Eagles were unable to net the equalizer in the final seconds of the game.

New Ulm outshot the Eagles 42-31 for the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 37 saves.
