The Windom Eagle football team fell to 0-2 on the season Friday night, falling behind early and never recovering in a 56-6 loss to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at Winthrop.

GFW's ground game battered the Eagles early in the contest, while Windom's offense struggled to find its footing early. Windom trailed 22-0 after one quarter.

In the second, the Eagles were able to mount a drive deep into GFW territory, only to see the drive stall out. The Thunderbirds tacked on a pair of long touchdown runs, taking a 36-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Eagles were able to get on the board, when Kade Sammons scored on a 14-yard run, but the Eagles trailed 50-6 after three quarters and allowed a late touchdown for the 56-6 final.

Sammons led the Eagles with 86 yards rushing on 21 carries. He also completed 7-of-21 passes for 109 yards.

Conner Redman had a team-high five catches for 75 yards.

Mt. Lake Area's ground game wore down Westbrook-Walnut Grove Friday night as the Wolverines raced to a 49-6 victory at Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines outgained the Chargers 342-20 on the ground and 400-100 for the game.

MLA got on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game on a 21-yard Abe Stoesz touchdown run for a 6-0 lead.

After forcing a WWG punt, the Wolverines marched 83 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 13-yard Stoesz touchdown run. Kolby Kremmin's extra-point kick gave MLA a 13-0 lead after one quarter.

WWG mounted a clock-eating drive that saw it march to the MLA 40-yard line. But four false start penalties and a sack stifled WWG's drive and forced a punt. Late in the half, the Wolverines capitalized on an 11-yard Stoesz touchdown run for a 19-0 lead.

After forcing a quick three-and-out, the Wolverines got the ball back and immediately scored on a 75-yard run by Stoesz, who added the two-point conversion run for a 27-0 halftime lead.

MLA forced a fumble on WWG's first drive of the second half, resulting in a 2-yard Mace Herrig touchdown run. Kremmin's extra-point kick gave MLA a 34-0 lead.

The two teams then traded turnovers, with MLA's Isaac Grev intercepting a pass, only to have WWG's Jace Paplow recover a fumble two plays later. But WWG's drive ended when Jon Faber recovered his second fumble of the game. MLA capped the drive with a 3-yard Herrig touchdown run for a 41-0 lead.

WWG broke the shutout halfway through the fourth quarter. The Charger defense forced MLA to punt, but the snap sailed over the head of the Wolverine punter. Coltin Pilaczynski recovered the ball in the end zone for the Chargers.

But on MLA's final offensive play of the night, Micah Holmberg took a pitch and raced 59 yards to paydirt. The two-point run gave MLA a 49-6 win.

Stoesz finished the game with 228 yards and four touchdowns on 11 rushing attempts. Holmberg rushed three times for 69 yards and Herrig added 42 yards on nine carries.

For WWG, Jace Paplow rushed 14 times for 43 yards. Ethan Mischke completed 8-of-20 passes for 80 yards. Pilaczynski had two catches for 29 yards, while Nathan Kuehl grabbed two receptions for 21 yards. Gabe Krick had two catches for 16 yards.

Red Rock Central's defense was the story Friday night, as the Falcons made a late touchdown stand in a 20-14 victory over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart at Hector.

After a scoreless first half, the Falcons got on the board with a little trickery. Fullback Hayden Determan hit Mason Irlbeck on a halfback pass, giving RRC a 6-0 lead after three quarters.

BLHS used its powerful ground game to take the lead twice in the fourth quarter, as Zachary Rueber scored on a pair of touchdown runs. But each time, RRC had an answer.

Down 7-6 early in the fourth, the Falcons drove into Mustang territory and scored when Luke Willhite hit Jonah Hansen out of the backfield for a 39-yard touchdown.

BLHS scored on a 37-yard Rueber touchdown with just over five minutes to play. But after a long kickoff return gave RRC the ball at the Mustang 47. On the next play, Hansen burst through the line and outraced the defense for a touchdown.

The Falcon defense then shut down the Mustangs on their next drive. RRC did not allow a single passing yard to BLHS in the game.

Hansen led the Falcons on the ground with 96 yards on 21 carries. Determan added 81 yards on 10 carries.

Willhite went 6-of-9 passing for 126 yards in the game. Hansen caught four passes for 112 yards.
