Windom 031 231 022 = 14-21-1
Heron Lake 011 000 100 = 3-9-2

The Windom Pirates hammered out 21 hits and Pirate pitchers recorded 16 strikeouts Sunday as Windom defeated the Heron Lake Lakers 14-3 at Heron Lake.

With the win, the Pirates captured the First Nite League championship, winning a tiebreaker over Fairmont. Both teams finished with 13-4 records in First Nite/Gopher League play, but the Pirates won the league title by virtue of sweeping the season series with Fairmont.

As the First Nite League champion, the Pirates receive a bye into the Region 13C playoffs, which begin July 24. Also receiving byes into the tournament are the top two teams from the Gopher League, Milroy and Luverne. The rest of the eight-team field will be determined in First Nite/Gopher crossover series, which begin Wednesday.

In Sunday's game, the Pirates jumped to a lead on a bases-clearing Conner Redman double in the top of the second.

Windom took a 4-1 lead in the third on a Collin Lovell RBI single. Windom stretched the lead to 6-2 in the fourth when Jack Mellstrom hit an RBI double and scored on a Luke Gilbertson sacrifice fly.

Windom added three runs in the fifth. Kobe Lovell scored on a passed ball, Jacob Johnson hit an RBI single and Redman plated a run with a fielder's choice.

Alex Borsgard added an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth, giving Windom a 10-2 lead.

In the eighth, the Pirates got back-to-back RBI singles from Johnson and Redman. Then, in the ninth, Windom put the game away with a two-run double by Kobe Lovell.

Kobe Lovell and Borsgard each had four hits in the win. Collin Lovell added three hits. Redman had two hits and five RBI while Johnson and Mellstrom added two hits each.

Collin Lovell earned the pitching win, working the first six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits, striking out 11.
