Pirates roll past Jackson

Jackson 100 000 00 = 1-5-3
Windom 000 040 34 = 11-12-3

The Windom Pirates avenged a loss from earlier in the season and clinched no worse than the second seed in the First Nite League Wednesday with an 11-1 win over the Jackson Bulls at the Windom Recreation Area.

The Bulls got on the board in the top of the first, scoring on an error. But Pirate pitcher Ross Ackerman slammed the door the rest of the way, holding the Bulls to five hits in the complete-game victory. He walked one and struck out four in the game.

The Pirates broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Collin Lovell led off with a walk and Alex Borsgard was hit by a pitch. Jacob Johnson then attempted a sacrifice bunt, which rolled all the way down the third base line for an infield single, loading the bases with no outs. Jack Mellstrom followed with a two-run double, giving Windom the lead. After Sam Huska was intentionally walked with one out, Devin Nielsen laced a two-run single, giving Windom a 4-1 lead.

The Pirates stretched the lead in the seventh. Noah Kloss hit an RBI single, Kobe Lovell drew a bases-loaded walk and Kloss scored on a wild pitch, giving Windom a 7-1 lead.

The Pirates ended the game in the bottom of the eighth. Huska drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Nielsen hit an RBI single and Borsgard hit a two-run single, ending the game by the 10-run rule.

Nielsen led the Pirates with three hits and three RBI in the win. Danny Kneeland, Kloss and Kobe Lovell each had two hits.

With the win, the Pirates can clinch the top seed in the First Nite League, and a first-round bye in the Region 13C playoffs, with a win Sunday at Heron Lake. The Pirates would finish tied with Fairmont atop the standings, but Windom holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Martins. Game time Sunday is 2 p.m.
