The Class A State Track and Field Meet begins this afternoon at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Both local competitors will be in action this afternoon. Windom sophomore Delaney Smith will participate in the discus competition, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Participants will compete in two flights, taking three throws each. The top nine performers after the first three throws advance to the finals for an additional three throws. Smith enters the competition seeded fifth.
Smith also will be in action Saturday, taking part in the girls shot put competition, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Similar to the discus, throwers in two flights will each take three throws. The top nine finishers advance to the finals for an additional three throws. Smith enters the shot put competition seeded second.
Windom sophomore Gracie Bucher will compete in the 800-meter run prelims this afternoon, beginning at 5:45 p.m. Bucher will run in the second of two preliminary heats. The top two finishers in each heat automatically advance to Saturday's finals. Additionally, the top five non-automatic qualifiers from the two heats combined also advance.
The fastest finisher at last week's section meets will run in the same heat as Bucher. The second-seeded runner in the field is Grace Drietz of Canby-Minneota, who finished ahead of Bucher at last week's Section 3A Meet.
The 800-meter run finals on Saturday are scheduled for 6:25 p.m.
