The Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey fastpitch team advanced to the Section 2A championship series after winning a pair of wild elimination-round games Tuesday at Caswell Park in Mankato.

In the day's opener, the Wolverines saw a commanding early lead evaporate, but rebounded with a come-from-behind 12-9 victory over Sleepy Eye Public.

MLAC raced to a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, sending 12 hitters to the plate. Molly Carnell drove in a run when she reached on an error, Rylie Tollefson and Hailey Pidde followed with RBI singles, Jaelin Renquist drove in a run with a fielder's choice, Destiny Sybounheuan lined a two-run double and Taylor Naas hit an RBI single.

Sleepy Eye battled back, scoring five runs in the second and one in the third to cut the Wolverine lead to 7-6, but MLAC answered in the bottom of the third when Carnell scored on an error.

Sleepy Eye scored once in the fourth, then took the lead at 9-8 with a two-run fifth inning. But the Wolverines scored four times in the bottom of the fifth, taking the lead for good. Pidde hit an RBI single, Brooke Naas ripped a two-run double and Renquist added an RBI single, sealing the win.

Carnell, Tollefson and Pidde each had three hits in the win.

Carnell earned the pitching win, allowing nine runs on 15 hits. She walked one and struck out four.

That moved MLAC into the true-second matchup against Sleepy Eye St. Mary's. Again, the Wolverines got off to a big early lead. This time, MLAC hung on late, preserving a 12-9 victory.

The Wolverines scored four times in the top of the first inning. Margo Stoesz started the offense with a two-run single, followed by RBI singles from Pidde and Renquist.

St. Mary's answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, but MLAC took command again with a five-run second inning, scoring all five runs after two outs had been recorded. Tollefson ripped an RBI single. Brooke Naas added a two-run single and Renquist and Lexi Toll each added RBI singles.

The Wolverines stretched the lead to 12-3 in the sixth inning. Pidde launched a two-run home run and Toll added an RBI single.

St. Mary's battled back, scoring twice in the sixth to cut the Wolverine lead to 12-5. The Knights then scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, cutting MLAC's lead to 12-9. But St. Mary's never got the tying run to the plate and a groundout to third base ended the threat and the game.

Stoesz led the Wolverine attack with four hits. Pidde added three hits and three RBI while Brooke Naas, Renquist and Toll added two hits each.

Carnell earned the pitching win, allowing nine runs on 12 hits. She struck out eight.

With the wins, MLAC advances to Thursday's Section 2A finals against top-seeded New Ulm Cathedral. Earlier in the tournament, Cathedral rallied to defeat the Wolverines 7-6 in eight innings. Cathedral tied the game at 6-6 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, then scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
