Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey had the top-seeded team in the Section 2A fastpitch softball playoffs on the ropes Saturday morning in Mankato, but New Ulm Cathedral rallied to tie the game in the seventh, then scored in the eighth to walk off with a 7-6 win at Caswell Park.

That dropped the Wolverines into the elimination bracket, where they stayed alive in the tourney with a 5-2 victory over Nicollet.

In the opener, the Wolverines took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Taylor Naas drove in a run with a groundout and Rylie Tollefson and Hailey Pidde each hit RBI singles.

Cathedral regained the lead with a run in the third and two in the fourth, but the Wolverines answered in the fifth on a two-run Margo Stoesz home run. The Wolverines pushed the lead to 6-4 in the sixth when Brooke Naas scored on the back end of a double steal.

But Cathedral mounted a two-out rally in the seventh when Heidi Hoffman hit a two-run single, tying the game at 6-6.

Then, with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, a hard grounder skipped past the infield, allowing the Greyhounds to plate the winning run on an error.

Tollefson had three hits in the loss. Lexi Toll added two hits for the Wolverines.

Molly Carnell took the pitching loss, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines scored in the third inning when Jaelin Renquist singled, pinch runner Jaci Tollefson stole two bases and scored on a throwing error.

The Wolverines added two runs in the fourth. Stoesz hit an RBI sacrifice fly and Rylie Tollefson scored on a passed ball.

The Wolverines stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a Taylor Naas RBI groundout.

Nicollet cut the Wolverine lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth, but MLAC scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on a Brooke Naas RBI groundout.

Rylie Tollefson led MLAC with three hits.

Carnell earned the complete game pitching win, allowing six hits without a walk and striking out seven.
