St. James 000 120 0 = 3-5-3
Windom 300 010 x = 4-8-1

Windom 000 000 0 = 0-1-1
Fairmont 000 004 x = 4-4-0

The Windom Eagle baseball team won its Section 3AA playoff opener Saturday, but lost in the second game of the tournament at Fairmont, dropping into the elimination portion of the bracket.

The Eagles opened the tourney with a 4-3 victory over St. James.

In that game, Windom scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Quiring hit an RBI single, Kobe Lovell smashed an RBI double and Kade Sammons plated a run with a groundout.

St. James battled back, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. But in the bottom of the fifth, Lovell led off with a walk, advanced on a single and a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

St. James put the leadoff batter on base in the sixth inning, but the runner was caught trying to steal. The Saints added a baserunner in the seventh, but a flyout to right field ended the game.

Alex Borsgard led the Eagles with three hits in the game.

Kobe Lovell picked up the pitching win, working 2-1/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out three.

In the second game of the day, Windom and Fairmont hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel for the first five innings before the pitch count rule forced the Eagles to lift Lovell from the game.

Fairmont mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth, using two hits, four walks and a hit batsman to score four runs on its way to a 4-0 victory.

The Eagles had few opportunities, offensively, against Cardinal pitchers Jack Hested and Dahlen Keltgen. Windom was held to just one hit in the game, when Hunter Walklin beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles drew two walks and had three batters hit by pitches.

The Eagles' best chance to score came in the fifth inning. Sam Doorenbos drew a one-out walk and Walklin beat out his sacrifice bunt attempt. With two on and one out, Eric Pfeffer hit a line drive that was snared by Hestad, who fired to second for the line-drive double play.

Windom pitchers held the Cardinals to four hits in the game, but three straight bases-loaded walks and a hit batsman with the bases loaded allowed the four Fairmont runs.

Lovell worked the first five innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 11. Walklin took the pitching loss, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning.

RRC/WWG 200 000 0 = 2-4-1
ESWC 000 100 2 = 3-4-1

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove was one strike away from advancing in the Section 3A playoffs, but a two-out, two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh gave Edgerton/Southwest Christian a 3-2 victory over the Falcons Saturday in Adrian, ending the Falcons' season.

RRC/WWG scored its only two runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Calvin Anderson hit an RBI single and Austin Irlbeck scored on a throwing error.

ESWC cut into the lead with a squeeze bunt for a run in the fourth inning.

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons nearly ended the game on a comebacker but were unable to turn the double play. With runners on second and third with two outs and a 2-2 count, outfielder Zach Johnson hit a two-run single, giving the Dutchmen the come-from-behind win.

RRC/WWG pitcher Trent Halvorson allowed two hits over 5-2/3 innings. Mason Irlbeck took the tough loss, allowing two runs on two hits in an inning of relief.

Next games: Check for updates after each game.
