Wolverine baseball wins conference opener

MCC 100 000 0 = 1-3-2
MLAC 010 102 x = 4-7-1

The Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey baseball team opened Red Rock Conference play Tuesday with a strong pitching performance, claiming a 4-1 victory over Murray County Central at Mt. Lake.

MCC got on the board in the top of the first, but Wolverine pitchers Abe Stoesz and Brett Willaby held the Rebels off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

MLAC got on the board in the second when Jon Faber reached on an error, driving in a run.

The Wolverines took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Willaby.

Then, in the sixth, MLAC put the game away. Drake Harder ripped an RBI double and scored on a Faber RBI single.

The Wolverines recorded seven hits in the win.

Stoesz worked the first five innings for the win, allowing one hit and walking four while fanning eight. Willaby pitched the final two innings for a save, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two.

A passed ball on a dropped third strike in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score for Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda Tuesday, as the Coyotes claimed a 3-2 win over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove at Heron Lake.

RRC/WWG scored in the top of the third when Mitchell Willhite scored on an error. Then, in the top of the seventh, the Falcons took a 2-1 lead when Mason Irlbeck lined an RBI single.

But the Coyotes rallied in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases and tying the game on a wild pitch. Than, in the ninth, with two on and two out, a passed ball allowed the game-ending run to score.

RRC/WWG had five hits in the game.

Trenton Halvorson took the pitching loss, working the final 2-2/3 innings in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out four.
