DB 32-40 = 72
WWG 38-42 = 80

Westbrook-Walnut Grove answered every comeback bid by Dawson-Boyd in the second half Friday night, claiming an 80-72 victory in the Section 3A championship game, played at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

The win sends the Chargers to the state tournament for the first time since 1994.

WWG led by six at halftime, but the Blackjacks started the second half with an 8-2 run, tying the game at 40-40. The game would be tied three times in the second half. But in each case, the Chargers answered with baskets.

And for the third straight game, free throws proved to be the difference for the Chargers. WWG went 20-of-28 from the line for the game, including 11-of-15 in the second half to seal the win. Dawson-Boyd was just 4-of-6 from the line.

WWG started strong. A 7-0 run with two Walker Christians buckets and a conventional three-point play by Andrew Quade gave WWG an early 11-6 lead.

The Chargers added to the lead on a three-point play by Parker Freeburg, a pair of Quade free throws and an Ethan Mischke bucket to go up 21-10.

After Dawson-Boyd cut the deficit to 26-18, WWG built its biggest lead of the game on a driving lay-up and a three-pointer by Quade for a 31-18 edge.

The Blackjacks rallied late in the first half, using four three-pointers to cut WWG's lead to 38-32 at halftime.

The 8-2 run to start the second half pulled Dawson-Boyd even at 40-40, but a three-pointer by Quade put WWG back up 43-40. Dawson-Boyd answered with a free throw and a bucket, tying the game at 43-43, but Mischke hit a bucket to regain the lead. After Dawson-Boyd tied the game at 45-45, Mischke drained a three-pointer for a 48-45 edge.

A Parker Freeburg bucket and a Nathan Ross three-pointer gave WWG a 55-48 lead. Hunter Lien then hit a driving lay-up and a trey, giving WWG a 60-55 edge.

A Mischke three-pointer and a pair of Ross free throws made the score 65-58 and a bucket by Lien gave WWG a 67-60 lead.

Dawson-Boys tried to battle back, cutting the Charger lead to 70-67 on a three-pointer with under three minutes to play, but Mischke answered with a three-point play, pushing the lead to 73-67.

The Blackjacks again cut the Charger lead to three on a trey, but WWG used a pair of free throws and a Freeburg basket to take a 77-70 lead with 40 seconds to go.

The Blackjacks scored with 30 seconds to play, making the score 77-72, but Quade hit a free throw and Ross hit a pair from the line with 16 seconds left, sealing the Charger win.

Mischke led all scorers with 28 points for the Chargers. Quade chipped in 20, Ross added 12 and Freeburg scored nine in the win.

WWG will play in the first round of the state tournament on March 21 at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Pairings for the state tournament are expected to be announced Saturday morning (March 16).
