The free throw line has been a sore spot for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team much of the season.

But in Monday's Section 3A South championship game, WWG came up big from the line, while top-seeded Southwest Christian stumbled.

WWG went 12-of-14 from the line in the second half, including eight-of-eight down the stretch.

With the score tied in the closing seconds, Charger junior Nathan Ross hit a driving lay-up with eight seconds left, giving WWG a two-point lead.

SWC was fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.7 seconds left on the clock. Jacob Van Dam hit the first, but missed the final two, preserving a 74-73 victory for the Chargers.

In the first half, WWG was able to work the ball inside to 6-7 center Parker Freeburg, who scored 10 first half points.

That ultimately opened the door for the Charger outside game. Ethan Mischke hit a trio of three-pointers in the first half, while Ross added nine early points.

SWC's defensive pressure allowed the Eagles to cut into the deficit early in the second half, but WWG maintained the lead thanks to hot shooting from the stripe.

SWC tied the game with a conventional three-point play in the final minute. But WWG was able to run the clock down to the final seconds, with Ross driving the baseline to convert a left-handed lay-up with eight seconds left.

After a time out, SWC raced upcourt, dishing the ball from the lane to Van Dam for a three-point try with time running out. Van Dam drew a foul on the attempt, going to the line for three free throws to potentially win the game for the Eagles. Van Dam made the first, but missed the second attempt. With one more shot to send the game to overtime, Van Dam's attempt hit off the back iron. WWG batted the ball away from the basket, allowing time to expire.

Mischke finished the game with 20 points for the Chargers. Freeburg added 18, Ross scored 17 and Quade chipped in 12.
