Four Cobras, two Bobcats advance to state
State first-round matchups
126#A: Brett Willaby (WML, jr., 31-3) vs. Wyatt Lahr (Royalton-Upsala, sr., 25-15). Willaby was ranked second in the final rankings. Lahr was unranked.

145#A: Zach Spinks (WML, sr., 25-9) vs. Collin Boese (Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, 8th grade, 21-6). Spinks was ranked seventh in the final rankings. Boese was unranked.

152#A: Alex Borsgard (WML, sr., 34-2) vs. Nik Gardin (Otter Tail Central, jr., 23-23). Borsgard was ranked third in the final rankings. Gardin was unranked.

152#A: Jared Schroepfer (WRRC, sr., 29-6) vs. Spencer Miller (Staples-Motley, sr., 23-3). Schroepfer was unranked in the final rankings. Miller was ranked fourth.

195#A: Derek Werner (WRRC, jr., 30-5) vs. Sawyer Klatt (Roseau, jr., 33-7). Werner was ranked sixth in the final rankings. Klatt was unranked.

220#A: Jabari Carlton (WML, sr., 26-10) vs. Tim Peppel (BOLD, so., 31-5). Carlton was unranked in the final rankings. Peppel was ranked fifth.


Cobras send four to state
The Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team will have four participants in the Class A state tournament, after each finished in the top two at their weight classes at the Section 3A Individual Tournament, held in Windom.

The Cobras had three individual section champions. At 126 pounds, junior Brett Willaby picked up first-period falls in the first round and in the semifinals. He then won a 9-2 decision over Sam Kulseth of St. James Area in the championship match.

At 152 pounds, senior Alex Borsgard won a first-round fall, then had a 9-1 major decision win in the semifinals. He then won an 11-5 decision over Jared Schroepfer of Wabasso-Red Rock Central to win the championship.

At 220 pounds, senior Jabari Carlton opened with a first-round fall. He then won a thrilling 4-3 semifinal decision on a last-second takedown. In the finals, he hung on late for a 5-4 decision over Eli Edlin of Jackson County Central.

The Cobras' fourth qualifier came at 145 pounds. Senior Zach Spinks opened the tourney with a fall, then won an 11-2 major decision victory. In the championship, Spinks lost a 3-1 decision to Anthony Axford of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove. Spinks then had to wrestle Minneota's Jonah Gruenes for true second, but Spinks earned a commanding 7-0 victory, earning a trip to state.

One Cobra earned a third-place medal at sections. Sophomore Kade Sammons dropped a 3-0 semifinal decision to Teddy Pesch of Minneota. Sammons came back with a fall, then won a 12-0 major decision over Caleb Vancura of JCC to place third. Becaused Pesch lost in the championship, Sammons did not receive a shot at true second.

Micah Holmberg (120) and Kaden Haberman (182) each placed fourth. Trenton Renquist (138), Keith Swenson (195) and Eli Mutz (285) each finished fifth. Osmar Roman Parada (170) placed sixth.

Two Bobcats advance to state
Wabasso-Red Rock Central will have two wrestlers in the Class A state tournament, following their performance at the Section 3A Individual Tournament this weekend in Windom.

At 195 pounds, junior Derek Werner had two byes into the semifinal round. Werner then recorded a fall before winning a 9-8 thriller over Josh Steffen of Canby in the championship match.

At 152 pounds, senior Jared Schroepfer won a technical fall and a major decision to advance to the finals. There, he lost an 11-5 decision to Alex Borsgard of Windom-Mt. Lake. Schroepfer then had to wrestle for true second, but advanced to state after pinning Kalib Greenman of Canby in 1:41.

Mason Irlbeck (126), Tyler Bliss (170), Ryan Liebl (220) and Cory Anderson (285) each placed fourth. Lance Wagner (182) finished sixth. Wagner had advanced to the semifinals, but an injury suffered during his semifinal match forced him to medically forfeit out of the tournament.
