Mt. Lake Area's defense dominated, setting the offense up in short field situations throughout the game Thursday night as the Wolverines defeated Hills-Beaver Creek 34-0 to win the Section 3 Nine-Man championship at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

The Wolverines held HBC to 128 yards of total offense for the game. Meanwhile, the Wolverines' longest scoring drive of the night was 51 yards.

MLA returned the game's opening kickoff to the HBC 45-yard line. The Wolverines then marched 45 yards in 10 plays, capped with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Abraham Stoesz to Ethan Nickel on a fourth-down play. The extra-point kick failed, leaving the score at 6-0.

MLA forced the Patriots to punt, taking over at the HBC 46. A 25-yard completion from Stoesz to Brett Willaby set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Mace Herrig. The two-point conversion pass from Stoesz to David Larson gave MLA a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

HBC followed with one of its best drives of the night, moving to the MLA 40. But back-to-back sacks by Kade Kremmin and Larson forced the Patriots to punt.

MLA started the ensuing drive at its own 7-yard line, and a penalty moved the Wolverines back to the 3. The Wolverines methodically drove to the Patriot 28-yard line in 14 plays, but a sack forced the Wolverines to punt late in the second quarter. HBC was able to drive to the MLA 29, but time ran out in the first half.

On the second play of the second half, HBC coughed up the ball, with Eli Karschnik recovering at the Patriot 30. A 29-yard run by Drake Harder set up a 1-yard plunge by Herrig for a 20-0 lead.

After forcing a quick punt on HBC's next possession, the Wolverines marched 51 yards in eight plays, capped with a 4-yard Herrig touchdown run. Stoesz tacked on the two-point conversion run for a 28-0 lead.

MLA forced another HBC punt, taking over on the Patriot 43-yard line. The Wolverines covered the 43 yards in seven plays, capped with Harder diving into the end zone from three yards out. The extra-point kick failed, leaving the score at 34-0.

The teams traded punts the rest of the fourth quarter before time eventually ran out, sending the Wolverines to the state tournament.

Stoesz led MLA on the ground with 82 yards on 17 carries. Harder rushed 10 times for 60 yards and Herrig had 11 carries for 45 yards.

Stoesz completed 6-of-10 passes for 99 yards. Herrig had one catch for 39 yards. Nickel had two catches for 15 yards.

MLA advances to the Nine-Man state tournament for the second straight season. The Wolverines will play on Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., at Buffalo High School against the Section 4 champion. Top-seeded Verndale plays second-seeded Underwood for the Section 4 title Friday at 12:30 p.m., at the FargoDome.
