Eagle baseball sweeps JCC

The Windom Eagle baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Jackson County Central Monday in Jackson, with the first game ending in controversial fashion.

Windom took the opener 7-2 and won the nightcap 5-1.

Game one was ended after the top of the sixth inning when it was determined that JCC had violated the MSHSL rule regarding maximum pitch count. After the top of the sixth inning with Windom leading 7-2, Eagle Coach Brad Schlomann conferred with JCC regarding the count for its starting pitcher.

Schlomann contended that the pitcher had started two at-bats after he had exceeded the maximum pitch count of 105. After a lengthy conversation that saw JCC review the count based on what it had in its scorebook, JCC also concluded its pitcher had exceeded the count and the game ended.

Windom took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on back-to-back RBI singles from Chase Maricle and Luke Gilbertson.

Then, in the third, Kobe Lovell smashed a three-run home run over the right-center field fence, giving the Eagles a 5-1 lead.

Windom added its final two runs in the fifth on a Kyle Espenson RBI double and a Kade Sammons RBI single.

Espenson had three hits in the win. Gilbertson, Andrew Quiring, Conner Redman and Noah Kloss had two hits each.

Gilbertson picked up the complete-game win, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out nine.

In the nightcap, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Quiring and Borsgard.

Sammons added an RBI single in the fourth and Lovell hit a two-run single in the fifth.

Quiring, Borsgard and Espenson had two hits each in the win.

Lovell worked the first 5-1/3 innings for the win, allowing seven hits and striking out nine.
