12/1/2020 4:30:00 PM 'Newsies' rehearsals go virtual during distance learning
The show will go on!
That's the battle cry the directors, cast and crew of Windom Area High School's 2020 fall musical "Newsies" is chanting as in-person rehearsals have been shut down. When the entire district went to distance learning last month, that put a halt to all extracurricular activities, including the fall musical.
However, that doesn't mean the production is done for the 2020-21 school year - far from it.
The cast was scheduled to record the show on Nov. 16, the day the district announced it was going to distance learning.
"We recorded a little bit of it on that Saturday (Nov. 14)," Axford said, noting that it was a prep time for the full scheduled recording two days later. "I wish so badly that we had been able to record the whole thing that day."
That would have allowed the musical to be shown online. Now, the cast, crew and directors are in a holding pattern as to when they will be able to record and post the video. What they all know is that the 2020 fall musical will have to wait until 2021 to be recorded and aired. Windom Area Schools is continuing distance learning until the Christmas break. What happens when the school is scheduled to return from the break on Jan. 4 remains to be seen.
So, what does the cast and crew do in the meantime?
Like their day-to-day school routine, they are continuing to rehearse periodically in a virtual setting. Axford has called the cast together twice on Google Meets and they rehearse their lines virtually.
