10/27/2020 4:39:00 PM WAHS to bring 'Newsies' to TV screen
"Extra! Extra! Read all about it!"
Most of us weren't around to remember a young lad bellowing those words on the street corner of a big city. But in cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and, of course, New York City, they were an integral conduit between those who wrote and published the newspaper and those who were eager to read each day's issue.
So, imagine what happened when those young newspaper sellers went on strike?
Windom area residents won't have to imagine, they'll actually learn the story behind the 1899 newsboys strike in New York City. That's the premise behind the 2020 Windom Area High School Fall Musical "Newsies: The Musical," a Disney production.
Rachel Axford, who is directing her 14th fall musical in Windom and musically directing her 30th production, has several reasons for bringing the Disney musical to Windom theater patrons. Foremost among them is the opportunity to stream the production online.
"Disney, through MTI Theater, is allowing people to buy streaming rights and scheduled performance rights," Axford explains. "That way I knew I could tell the kids we were going to do the musical and we could present it some manner. How we present it is still up in the air, but we know that part of this is going to rely on videotaping, editing and presenting it in some medium event."
For much more on the production, including information on how the school is producing a musical in a pandemic, see the stories on the Education page in the Oct. 28 issue of the Cottonwood County Citizen on newsstands tomorrow.
