SCAM ALERT: 'Publisher's Clearinghouse Scam' strikes again
Scam alert: 'Publisher's Clearinghouse Scam" strikes again
Everyone wants to be a big cash prize winner. Folks love to imagine what they would buy with the millions of dollars that suddenly drop into their accounts.
So when someone calls saying they've won the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, they want to believe. That is what scammers are counting on.
Last week, the Cottonwood County Sheriff's Department heard a sad tale of a man burned by the scam.
"The caller sent the resident a photo of a check with the person's name on it," said Sheriff Jason Purrington.
There was a catch, as usual. The caller asked the resident to send $1,200 to "cover expenses" using Walmart gift cards as payment. After sending the gift cards, the caller told the man to pay an additional $6,000. At that point, he contacted law enforcement.
Purrington said the case is under investigation and the man is still out $1,200.
