County recognizes 150 years; First settler fled in 1860s

Cottonwood County had one known white resident in 1858.

He was a German immigrant trapper named Karl Zierke, then 29. Zierke came with a Louie Raemer and one other companion on a trip along a creek in Ann Township. Fur-bearing animals were abundant in area creeks and sloughs, an inducement for the first white people to come here.

For much more on this story, see the Feb. 26 Cottonwood County Citizen and Citizen eEdition. Also, watch future editions of the Citizen for monthly articles about incidents, key people, important decisions and other aspects of the county's history as we celebrate Cottonwood County's 150th year.
