County recognizes 150 years; First settler fled in 1860s

Cottonwood County had one known white resident in 1858.

He was a German immigrant trapper named Karl Zierke, then 29. Zierke came with a Louie Raemer and one other companion on a trip along a creek in Ann Township. Fur-bearing animals were abundant in area creeks and sloughs, an inducement for the first white people to come here.
