Cemetery memorials are among the many services offered by local business
At a time when family members are making important decisions about a loved one, sometimes it's best to keep things simple and convenient.
That thought was fresh in Joel LaCanne's mind, several years ago, when he made the decision to offer cemetery memorials to the business he and his wife, Shannon, purchased 15 years ago, LaCanne Family Funeral Service. Having that connection has worked out well, though it has not been a focus of the business.
There are many different types of memorials, just as there are ideas on how they fit a particular person.
"Usually, when they come to us, people have some idea in mind, from being at cemeteries, or talking to others," Joel said. "At that point, they select the color and design of the stone.
"There are so many components, from the names and dates to what best represents one's life, various symbols."
For instance, Joel's mother, Barb is a retired elementary teacher and his father, Joe, is a retired art teacher. Their memorial will include an apple and some books and also a paint pallet.
"The memorial represents the life lived," Joel said.
After the design is completed, the artist at a monument company will do a detailed computerized drawing and send it to the family for approval.
"We want to be sure the names and dates are correct and that we have what the family had in mind," Joel said. "The process is seamless and it works great."
Variety of services
Meanwhile, LaCanne said other facets of the business appear to be doing well.
In addition, to funeral planning and cemetery memorials, LaCanne Family Funeral Service can assist with things like flowers, cremation and other needs.
More than three years ago, LaCanne Family Funeral Service unveiled its new Aqua Green Cremation service. And, a short time later, Joel and Shannon purchased First Floral Hallmark. That business is located on the north side of the Square.
And, although Shannon runs most of the First Floral business, it works hand-in-hand with LaCanne Family Funeral Service. One of the strengths of that tie-in is excellent communication.
"We knew it would work well, but it has worked even better than I had hoped," Joel said.
Aqua Green Cremation
Joel said Aqua Green Cremation is off to a great start.
"We are seeing a big increase in people's wishes for this service," Joel said. "We also offer preplanning services where we sit down with families, going through their wishes ahead of time.
"It is a great comfort. You get to be with people at such an intimate time of their life. After they pass, when you are able to see the arrangements turn out the way they had hoped, it is very gratifying."
A solid staff
Of course Joel and Shannon are very appreciative of their entire staff, which totals 10 full-time and part-time people.
Two key members of that group are Kari Hanson and Landon Johnson.
Johnson is a 2013 graduate of Windom Area High School. He is currently serving as a student intern. He will soon be a licensed funeral director. Meanwhile, Hanson serves as office manager. In addition to working closely with the public, Kari keeps the office organized.
